A Study on Staff Nurses¢¥ Autonomy


Abstract
This study is intended to describe nursing autonomy and to provide nursing administrators and nursing educators with basic data for increasing professional autonomy of nurses.
For this task, the author collected the data with questionnaire from November 11, 1991 to November 16, 1991. The subjects of this study were 133 nurses working at one university hospital in Seoul and the contents of questionaire were professional atuonomy, personal characteristics, and job related characteristics.
The autonomy score was mid level of professional autonomy (mean= 135.3, S.D.= 12.49). There was significant difference in autonomy score according to working department (F= 4.0825, P < .01). There were significant correlation between autonomy score and head nurse¢¥s leadership style (r= .2847, P < .001) and internal Lucus of control (r= -.2794, P < .01).
As a conclusion, change is necessary in working conditions and head nurse¢¥s leadership style for increasing professional autonomy.
